Samuel Oscar Grant Jr.


Samuel Oscar Grant Jr. died peacefully at home in Prescott, October 18,2010.

Sam was born May 24, 1934 in Walla Walla, W A to Sam and Irene Grant. He graduated from Prescott High School in 1952, attended Washington State College for a year where he joined Sigma Nu Fraternity. He then joined the Army with his cousin Larry Meliah and a friend Darrell Davin. After completing his service, he returned home to Prescott and farmed until his death. Sam was a fourth generation farmer. The land where he lived, farmed and raised his family ....... includes land homesteaded in 1858 by his great grandfather Jonathan Pettyjohn.

April 15, 1956 Sam married Georgene Nelson at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Walla Walla.

Survivors include his wife Georgene at home; daughter Monesa Grant and husband Curtis Walker, of Seatac, W A; son Mark Grant and wife Miriam Grant of Prescott, W A;

Grandchildren Michael Walker (Bridgette Castanellos) ofEI Cajon, CA; Christina Walker (Brian Howarth) of La Mesa, CA; Joseph Walker of Camp Lejeune, NC; Amber Pope (Raymond Pope) of Spokane; Erin Bennett (Jordon Bennett) of Cheney; RaeAnn Grant studying in Barcelona, Spain; Michael Grant, Prescott; and Hannah Grant, Prescott; Great Grandchildren Nathaniel and Jacob Walker ofEI Cajon, and Hunter Pope of Spokane; one sister Mary Grant Tompkins; sisterin-law Nancy Grant; two brothers, Joe Grant of Walla Walla, and John Grant (Patti Grant) of Walla Walla; sister-in-law Virginia Kent (John Kent); and many nieces and nephews.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill Grant, brother-in-law Lynn Tompkins, and nephew Frank Tompkins.

Rosary will be Sunday evening at 7:00 at Herring Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be Monday morning at 10:00 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, then burial at Ivy Cemetery in Prescott, followed by a reception lunch at the Prescott Lion's Hall.

Memorial donations may be made to DeSales Booster Club, Ivy Cemetery in Prescott, or the charity of your choice, through Herring Funeral Home, 315 West Alder, Walla Walla.
