Wallula couple die in US 12 wreck

Elmer and Mildred Riley of Wallula died after their car struck the rear of a tractor-trailer in Burbank.

BURBANK -- A Wallula couple died after their car struck a tractor-trailer on U.S. Highway 12 on Thursday morning.

According to the Washington State Patrol, Mildred A. Riley was pronounced dead at the scene of the 9:22 a.m. crash at Highway 12 and Humorist Road. Her husband, Elmer N. Riley, was taken to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, where he died Thursday afternoon. Both were 90 years old, police said.

Police said Elmer Riley was westbound on Highway 12 with Mildred as his passenger when their car struck the rear of a tractor-trailer stopped at Humorist Road for a traffic light. Fog in the area may have contributed to the crash. The crash remained under investigation today.

The driver of the truck, Jerman Pimentel, 31, of Quincy, was not injured, police said.

The crash was the second injury crash involving a car and tractor-trailer this week. On Monday, a car eastbound on Highway 12 failed to stop for a red light and collided with a tractor-trailer attempting to turn into the westbound lanes of the highway where it intersects with State Route 124.

The driver of that car was treated and released and the passenger was hospitalized after being taken to hospitals in the Tri-Cities.
