WALLA WALLA -- The community is invited to help crown this year's "Mr. Whitman" while raising money for a good cause.

Coordinated by members of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Whitman College, the event is an all-male beauty pageant featuring eight students battling to take top honors.

The competing men are seniors at the college, with four representing each of the fraternities at the school, and four others competing independently.

The event will take place at Cordiner Hall Friday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 and available at the Reid Campus Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily through Friday, or $8 at the door the night of the show.

Ticket sales will help raise funds for this year's cause, the Chris Elliott Fund for Glioblastoma Brain Cancer Research, based in Sammamish. This year's cause is in honor of a Whitman parent with the disease. The past three Mr. Whitman events raised more than $60,000 for other causes.

Kappa Kappa Gamma philanthropy chair Abby Neel said the bulk of the proceeds are raised in smaller fundraising efforts by sorority members and the fraternities. Along with the pageant competition, the night will also include performances from the Whitman Dance Team and a cappella group Schwa.
