BAKER CITY - The Mac-Hi boys cross country team qualified for state Saturday by placing second at the districts in Baker City.
The top seven Mac-Hi runners will now participate at the final meet of the year in Eugene on Saturday, Nov. 6.
"It's a great accomplishment for us to get our team to go," said Mac-Hi head coach John Milleson. "It's always special for individuals to get the chance to go to state, but for the entire team to get to go is that much better."
Lucas Simpson led the team with a third place finish and a time of 18:14. He was followed by John Lonai (fifth, 18:19), Caleb Taylor (seventh, 18:54), Ethan Taylor (14th, 19:50), David Camarena (16th, 20:04), Jose Esparza (26th, 22:05) and Jesus Saldana (28th, 22:31).
"Our whole team just ran exceptionally," Milleson said. "We had two goals this year. One was to get our times down by two minutes, and the other was to go to state. Today we achieved that goal."
The girls team did not qualify anyone to go to Eugene, although Kathleen Hopkins did finish with a time of 25:56 to place 11th.
The state meet is a day-long event with teams from all levels competing at Lane Community College.
"We won't know exactly how we'll stack up until we get there, but I know we have what it takes to compete," Milleson said. "I think we should do pretty well."
