PREP FOOTBALL — Tale of two halves in Waitsburg-Prescott's 14-13 victory over T-O-R

OAKESDALE - Waitsburg-Prescott tallied 158 of its 159 total yards of offense in the first half against Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia here Friday night, while taking a 14-7 lead into halftime.

It turned out that's all it needed, as Kris Cady blocked T-O-R's point-after attempt after a third-quarter touchdown, and W-P held onto the 14-13 Southeast 2B-11 victory.

"I'm worn out thinking about it," W-P coach Jeff Bartlow said. "Offensively, we had some very good numbers in the first half. We had 10 first downs (of W-P's 11 in the game), and we were running and passing real well.

"The second half, we thought we'd continue offensively, but there were things we didn't do well," he said. "But our defense picked it up and started to execute. It was really a tale of two halves."

Kris Cady punched it in from the 1-yard line in the first quarter as W-P took a 6-0 lead.

But T-O-R's Earl Gaines, who had 98 yards rushing in the game, answered with a 1-yard scoring run of his own as the hometeam took the 7-6 lead.

But W-P quarterback Zach Bartlow hit T.J. Hofer for a 3-yard TD reception, and the duo hooked up for the 2-point pass conversion, for the halftime lead.

Midway through the third quarter, Cady muffed a T-O-R punt to set T-O-R up at W-P's 7. Scott Eberle took it in for the score from the 1, but on the extra point Cady made up for the muff with a block. It turned out to be the game-winning point.

"I was proud of how hard they played," coach Bartlow said. "We didn't play up to our potential in terms of execution, but we cleaned up our penalty problems. I was happy to see that.

"It was wet, and we dropped the ball a little bit," he said. "But it was a good, close game. It's important at this point in the season to win close games. I told our kids it was going to be a fistfight of a game. I give them (T-O-R) a lot of credit."

W-P, which goes to 9-0 for the first time since 1967, Bartlow said, hosts Reardan in a crossover game at 7 p.m. Friday. Reardan, at 5-3 overall, is the fourth seed out of the Northeast.
