Whitman College swims to second at invite

The Missionary team wins the 200-yard medley relay.

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. - With Jamie Nusse, Paul Chang, Charlotte Graham and Keller Hawkins winning the 200-yard medley event, the Whitman College swim teams finished second overall at the annual Northwest Conference Relay Invitational on Saturday at Linfield College.

In combined men's and women's scoring in 15 relay events, including three mixed races, Whitworth was first with 186 points. Whitman was second with 112 points, edging Puget Sound by four points.

Next in line were Pacific Lutheran 102, Pacific 88, Linfield 48, and Willamette with 16.

In separate scoring for the men's and women's events, Whitman tied for third with Pacific Lutheran in each case.

In the other two mixed events, Nusse teamed with Mitchell Lee, Helen Jenne and Lauren Flynn to take second in the 200-yard freestyle, and it was Flynn, Lee, Chang and Graham placing third in the 400-yard freestyle.

The Whitman men placed second in two of their events.

Lee joined with Nick Wood and Chad Trexler for the runner-up spot in the 300-yard breaststroke. Nusse, Matt Rowett and Kevin Dyer combined for second in the 600-yard freestyle.

Meanwhile, the Whitman women were a model of consistency in their events, placing third in four of six relays.

Whitman returns to western Oregon in two weeks for its first NWC dual meets of the season.

The Missionaries swim Friday, Nov. 12 at Lewis & Clark and Saturday, Nov. 13 at Pacific.
