WALLA WALLA - Whitman welcomes a pair of fellow Washington schools and one from California to the Sherwood Center for the Whitman Volleyball Invitational this weekend.
The Missionaries host Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran, two of their Northwest Conference rivals, and Menlo College, an NAIA school from Thousand Oaks, Calif.
The tournament schedule includes four matches on Saturday and four more on Sunday. It gets rolling at 9 a.m. Saturday with Whitman and Puget Sound facing off in the season opener for the Missionaries.
The schedule also has Whitman playing Menlo at 5 p.m. Saturday and Pacific Lutheran at noon Sunday.
Based on results of the invitational's first six matches, two teams will battle for third place at 3 p.m. Sunday. The title match follows at 5 p.m.
A tournament MVP and six-player all-tournament team will be announced at the end of action Sunday.
Menlo, the two-time defending California Pacific Conference champions, is off to a 0-2 start this season, while all three NWC schools will be playing their official season openers in the Whitman tournament. Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound finished first and second, respectively, in the conference standings last fall, while Whitman placed ninth in league play.
