Pioneers fall behind early, never recover against Cheesemakers

Tillamook jumps out to a 21-0 lead in the first five minutes, and takes the 35-7 victory over Mac-Hi Friday.

TILLAMOOK, Ore. - The Mac-Hi Pioneers fell behind early and never recovered against the Tillamook Cheesemakers, losing 35-7 here Friday night.

Within in the first five minutes, the Pioneers trailed 21-0, but then were able to settle down to play some better football.

"We are very young and inexperienced," Mac-Hi coach Chuck Pease said, "and our nervousness showed early on in the ballgame."

Seven minutes into the first period, Mac-Hi held the Cheesemakers to eight points for the rest of the first half.

The last first-half touchdown for the Cheesemakers was scored after a fumble by the Pioneers deep in their own territory.

The first three touchdowns scored against Mac-Hi were all on longer drives, by way of the run.

On the night, Tillamook rushed for five touchdowns and had 285 yards on the ground.

Mac-Hi piled up 165 yards on the ground, led by two seniors. Josh Rutherford had 46 yards rushing on 13 carries, and Jesse Jones grinded out 57 yards running on six handoffs.

The Pioneers' starting quarterback, Derek Richwine, completed three of 10 passes for 86 yards and one touchdown.

The big scoring strike from Richwine "was about 30 yards in the air," Pease said, and caught by sophomore wide receiver Rick Sandoval, who scampered into the end zone for the final 16 yards to score the almost-50-yard touchdown.

The touchdown came in the final quarter of the game for Mac-Hi, which had "a long talk at halftime about trying to win the second half," said Pease.

The Pioneers did win the second half, outscoring their opponents 7-6.

Four Mac-Hi fumbles didn't help the Pioneers' cause, as three were gathered up by Tillamook.

The penalty total was about even, with Mac-Hi being whistled four times for 30 yards. Tillamook was called for five penalties and 65 yards.

Pease was happy with the effort of the team and the way they bounced back after the first-quarter shellacking to contain Tillamook's strong ground attack.

"After falling behind quick early," Pease said, "we settled down, played hard, concentrated and gave a good effort the rest of the game.

"Our breakdowns in the running-game defense occured at the line and in the secondary," he said.

The pass defense was better for the Pioneers, who gave up just 122 yards in the air and no touchdowns.
