WALLA WALLA - Shez Pretty Awesome sprinted to the finish line first Sunday at the Walla Walla Fairgrounds to win the Chet Young Memorial Quarter Horse Futurity during the third and final day of pari-mutuel horse racing at the Walla Walla Fair.

Shez Pretty Awesome, with J. Luis Torres in the irons, paced a field of seven 2-year-olds in a time of 13.56 seconds and paid $9.20 to win, $5.20 to place and $4.60 to show.

Kimz Huckleberry Hank, with Nikeela Black up, was nipped at the wire and returned $4.60 and $3.40. Both horses are trained by Bill C. Hoburg.

In Sunday's other featured races, Joe Crispin took Fancy Ending to the finish line first in the Dick Monahan Memorial Quarter Horse Allowance in a time of 13.51 and rode Gassan Royal to victory in the Queen's Derby Thoroughbred Allowance at a mile and an eighth in 2:00.1. Fancy Ending returned $4.60, $3.60 and $2.20 while Gassan Royal paid $3.60, $4.20 and $3.20 on an afternoon when horses generally ran to form.

Crispin rode four winners on Sunday, which gave him five winners for the weekend and a share of the top jockey award with Ruben Camacho, who had one winning ride on Sunday. Ashley Zacherle and Connie Doll rode four winners each for the weekend.

Walla Walla's Bill Hof was the top trainer with five of his horses appearing in the winner's circle, including Skimmed, who was the fastest of five Thoroughbreds in a 5-furlong claiming run Sunday. Crispin was also the winning jockey in that race.

The biggest payoff of the day occurred in the second race, another Thoroughbred Claiming run at 5 furlongs. Those who put Witchoneachopper first, Known as Lu second and Spring Run third on a $2 trifecta wager picked up $252.20 at the pay window. Known as Lu was the biggest surprise in that race, returning $6.60 to place and $6.20 to show.

The only other payouts to reach triple figures were trifecta risks in the first and last races of the day.

Deputy Dean ran first, Warbeast second and Crafty Reasoning third in a Thoroughbred Maiden race at 5 furlongs to begin the day and was worth $100 even for the trifecta. Dance Composer and Trixie Two followed Gassan Royal to the finish line in the final race, the Queen's Derby, and returned $113 on a trifecta wager.

Despite a card in which four of the first five races were five-horse fields, Sunday's handle was a respectable $43,057. That nearly matched Saturday's handle of $44,058 and boosted the total handle to $106,657, a figure that fell just short of last year's three-day handle of $110,130.
