WALLA WALLA - A second unit at the Washington State Penitentiary is on lockdown today after a fight among inmates.
The lockdown in Unit E in the prison's West Complex was implemented after four inmates started fighting in a common area of the unit this morning, said Shari Hall, prison spokeswoman. The unit is expected to return to normal operations Wednesday.
The lockdown affects 187 inmates in the unit, which is one of four close-custody units in the West Complex.
Last week prison officials locked down Unit G in the West Complex after an inmate assaulted a correctional officer in a day room. The officer was treated and released at a local hospital following the attack.
Hall said Unit G was expected to resume normal operations this morning, but was placed on restricted movement status until Thursday to evaluate two separate fights that occurred over the weekend.
Restricted movement is less restrictive than a lockdown and allows for activities to resume at a slower pace.
The lockdown and restricted movement has not affected scheduled activities for the rest of the facility, which is operating normally, Hall said.
