MILTON-FREEWATER - Mac-Hi's girls soccer team opened its season with a flurry of goals in a home victory over The Dalles-Wahtonka Tuesday, earning a 6-4 win thanks to a potent offensive attack.
Mac-Hi jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead behind a pair of early goals from Veronica Garcia and a shot from Mica Ecisanio that found the back of the net before
The Dalles-Wahtonka rallied to tie the game at three in the second frame.
"We came out really strong," said Mac-Hi head coach Martin Martinez. "I think they might have thought they kind of had it in the bag at halftime, but we were able to pull it back together and get the win, which is big because we lost to that team last year."
Garcia added two more goals in the second half run that saw Pioneers pull away from The Dalles-Whatonka, ending the afternoon with four goals, two of which were assisted by Ecisanio.
Belen Betancourt scored Mac-Hi's final goal, and Emily Childers, Shawney Garcia and Betancourt all picked up an assist.
"There are still some things that we have to work on," Martinez said.
"Overall though, we controlled the ball and moved it around the field really well. We'll be focused on working on our defense before our next game."
The Pioneers next take the field at noon Saturday at Shockman Field against Hermiston.
