WALLA WALLA -- A 19-year-old man suffered a stab wound to his chest early Wednesday during a fight in an alley near Eighth Avenue and West Poplar Street, police said.
Officials located the man when arriving at the scene shortly after 2 a.m. He was transported by ambulance to Providence St. Mary Medical Center, where he was in stable condition at last report.
Walla Walla County sheriff's deputies assisted police officers in finding people who ran from the area after the altercation. Several were interviewed, but no one was arrested.
"We have a good idea as to who the stabber is, but because of conflicting reports, we didn't have probable cause to arrest," police spokesman Tim Bennett said.
The name of the man who was stabbed isn't being released pending further investigation by detectives and a determination of the extent of his involvement.
"There are a lot of unanswered questions," Bennett said.
No other injuries requiring medical treatment were reported. A knife and a metal pipe that may have been used in the fight were located near the scene and are being held as evidence.
The cause of the altercation wasn't immediately known, but police don't consider it gang-related, according to Bennett.
