RICHLAND - The Wa-Hi girls swim team competed in its first meet of the season Eastern Washington Relay Meet in Richland Thursday.
The meet was attended by all Class 2A, 3A and 4A schools throughout eastern Washington, with relay events only as an early season tuneup.
This year's Wa-Hi team is led this year by co-captains Tori Jones and Jessica Hutton. Also, returning varsity swimmers this year are senior Bailey Ruff, junior Anna Reid and sophomores Courtney Griggs, Megan Evans, Abby Crowley and Cheyenne Schoen.
The team also features strong new swimmers, such as sophomore Maya Rapp, and freshmen Emma (Max) Timm-Ballard, Elli Rassbach, Natalie Fink, Jennifer Wall and Addily Dyer.
Team scores were not kept at Thursday's meet, but Wa-Hi's top finishers were the team of Max Timm-Ballard, Cheyenne Schoen and Tori Jones, which took first in the 300-yard individual medley relay; Abby Crowley, Anna Reid and Elli Rassbach, which also won the 150-yard backstroke relay; Timm-Ballard, Jones, Crowley and Schoen, who placed third in the 200-yard medley relay; and Jennifer Wall, Courtney Griggs, Andrea Hamada and Jones, who finished third in the 250-yard all-around relay.
"This was a good meet for us," said head coach Brad Daly. "Our returning swimmers are picking up this year in this first meet right were they left off last year. Besides that, several girls actually had some races yesterday where they were substantially faster than they were last year. Among those were Anna Reid, McKenzie Cosaert, and Katelyn Elmenhurst. I am very optimistic about the season ahead of us and thrilled with this year's group of girls."
They are having fun together, working hard and are positive, enthusiastic and motivated to make huge improvements this year."
