Churches to learn to help returning veterans

Officials at the Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial Veterans Affairs Medical Center are reaching out to area churches to prepare clergy and congregations for returning veterans.

On Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the VA will offer a free, three-part seminar to local church leaders, said Dave Beebe of the Walla Walla VA.

"We'll explain the significance of the military culture, what medical professionals are seeing in post-deployed soldiers and their family members and what resources are available. At the end we will have an interactive discussion about the kinds of things churches can do."

Participants will emerge able to recognize the signs of deployment-related issues, he said.

Lunch will be provided; registration closes Tuesday at noon.
