SPOKANE - Walla Walla Community College finished second out of 12 teams that competed here this weekend at the annual Community Colleges of Spokane tournament.
The Warriors dropped a 25-23, 25-9, 20-25, 25-19 decision to North Idaho in the championship match.
Walla Walla reached the tournament finale with a sweep of Linn-Benton, 26-24, 25-11, 25-15, in a semifinal match earlier on Saturday.
Walla Walla won two of three matches it played on Friday. The Warriors toppled Tacoma, 25-23, 25-18, 16-25, 25-19, lost to NWAACC Eastern Region foe Blue Mountain, 25-21, 25-20, 18-25, 16-25, 15-7, and clobbered Clackamas, 25-11, 25-16, 25-13.
Walla Walla's Nikki Long and Sharsti Goff were named to the all-tournament team. Long recorded 51 kills and Goff had 101 setting assists.
"Nikki had lots of critical kills and blocks," Walla Walla coach Tim Toon said. "Sharsti was competitive in every phase of the game."
Brittany Dominguez, Libby Kern, Laekynn Culpepper and Carley Miller also contributed to the runner-up finish, Toon said. Dominguez had 55 kills and 12; Kern had 38 kills and 17 blocks; Culpepper dug 69 balls and Miller added 49 digs. Kayla Hanus set 86 assists.
"Brittany and Libby were the best tandem of middle hitters at the tournament," Toon said. "Laekynn and Carley held down back-row duties with lot of great ball contacts. I credit Kayla with excellent setting.
"We came together as a team this weekend," Toon said. "All the teams we played were tough and we went toe-to-toe with all of them. I think we are now ready to make a quality run in East Region play."
The Warriors resume league play Wednesday at Yakima.
