Whitman volleyballers hand Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tournament loss

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Finishing its stay at the Cal-Lu-fornia Invitational on a strong note, the Whitman College women's volleyball team knocked off Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in four games (25-22, 25-23, 15-25, 25-18) here Saturday afternoon.

Whitman improved to 3-5 on the season, dropping the Athenas to 6-2.

Sophomore Courtney Brewer and first-year teammate Jillian Davis led the charge for Whitman with a pair of all-around efforts.

Brewer had 13 kills, 12 digs and six block assists while Davis mixed 11 kills with 16 digs, three service aces and three block assists.

Sophomores Carrie Cecil and Olivia Nielson added seven and six kills, respectively. Nielson also had six block assists and one solo block.

First-year setter Rachel Cline made the offense go with 38 assists and helped on defense with nine digs and five block assists.

Sophomores Hannah Halloran and Rachel Shober picked up 13 and 10 digs, respectively. First-year Missionary Becca Gotz had eight digs.

It was Whitman's second victory over the Athenas in as many years. The Missionaries beat CMS in five games at the same tournament last September.

Whitman opens Northwest Conference play next weekend, traveling to Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran on Friday and Saturday.
