POW/MIA remembrance ceremony planned at local VA


WALLA WALLA -- A POW/MIA remembrance ceremony will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. on the parade grounds of the Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial Veterans Affairs Medical Center. A reception will follow at 11 a.m. in the theater in Building 78.

The ceremony is open to veterans and nonveterans alike. Organizations involved include AMVETS Post 1111, VFW Posts 992 & 466, American Legion Post 32and Milton Freewater VFW Post 4567, who will display their post flags to form a color guard.

Also invited are James Bogart, a World War II POW who survived the Bataan Death March, and Thomas Phelan, a World War II/Korean War veteran who flew B-17s and B-24s as a bombardier during World War II. Both are part of the local VA's "trading card" series "American Heroes" program and will be available to sign their trading cards at the reception after the ceremony. There will be other POWs in attendance who will be available to share their stories or speak with visitors.
