Florence was born to Walter and Lillian Backous in Westport, South Dakota, Jan. 11, 1916. She attended and graduated from Westport Publc School. In 1937, she married James Hanley and they moved to Washington State. Mr. Hanley died in an accident at the Hanford Project in 1943. Florence married Arthur Kleinknecht on Feb. 4, 1946. They lived most of their 60 years of married life on their farm west of Walla Walla. Arthur died in 2006. She was very intrested in her children and grandchildren's education, sports and 4-H projects. She liked to sew, make quilts, knit and crochet. She attended St. Patrick Catholic Church.
She is survived by two daughters and son-in law, JoAnn Aliverti and Gene Aliverti of Walla Walla; Darlene Allen and Greer Allen of Kirkland, WA; 7 grandchildren, Steve Aliverti of Walla Walla, Melanie Aliverti of Bellingham, WA, Darrin (Dawn) Aliverti of Clarkston, WA, Barry Aliverti of Phoenix, AZ, Scott (Shari) Allen of Bellevue, WA, Geoff (Nancy) Allen of Winterpark, FL, Doug (Dana) Allen of Waterford, MI; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers, Emery Backous of Walla Walla, William Backous of Vancouver, WA; sister, Sally (Tom) Dickson of Milton-Freewater, OR. Sister-in-law Nancy Backous of Walla Walla, and numerous nieces and nephews. Florence is preceded in death by her husband Arthur, her son Maj. Larry J. Hanley, and her brothers, Russell Backous and Gene Backous.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be sent in her name to Walla Walla Catholic Schools or a charity of your choice through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W Alder, Walla Walla, WA. A graveside service conducted by Father Patrick Kerst, and celebration of life will be held at a later date.
