Penalties aside, Waitburg-Prescott manhandles Elgin in football matchup

Waitsburg-Prescott running back Kris Cady (No. 33) sees the open field ahead of him during a touchdown run Friday against Elgin.

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg-Prescott overcame eight fumbles and 100-plus yards in penalties here Friday to pull off a show of perseverance that would make Job proud.

W-P not only survived the self-inflicted ordeal, but hammered visiting Elgin, 40-10, in the second-to-last nonleague football tune-up for W-P.

"Penalties and a lack of discipline for a third week in a row," W-P coach Jeff Bartlow said. "We've got really great athletes who can overcome penalties, but against better teams you can't do that and get away with it.

"(Kris) Cady's run before half getting called back was huge."

Cady, a senior running back, had a banner night, compiling 128 yards on 10 carries, 33 yards on a lone reception and three touchdowns.

But Cady's night could have been even more stellar had his 63-yard dash down the left sideline with less than 30 ticks remaining before half had stood. The play, which ended with Cady tripped up at the Elgin 3-yard line, was called back by a holding penalty near the line of scrimmage.

That penalty negated a likely score, and allowed the Huskies to remain in the game at halftime down 20-2.

W-P's relentless offensive attack shut the door on the Huskies quickly in the third quarter. W-P quarterback Zach Bartlow scrambled for a 15-yard TD to wrap up a five-minute, 12-play drive, and Cady followed with a 17-yard TD sweep one play later after Elgin fumbled the ensuing kickoff.

QB Bartlow and senior receiver T.J. Hofer matched Cady's star performance with their own displays of aerial fireworks.

Bartlow found Cady for the Cardinals first score on a fly route down the left sideline 4:03 into the game. Then, over the span of five minutes late in the second quarter, Bartlow hooked up with Hofer twice down the right sideline for touchdowns.

The first was a 29-yard mirror image of Cady's catch and TD, while the second was created thanks to quick thinking by Bartlow and Hofer on a broken play.

Barlow's pocket broke down, forcing the W-P junior to roll to his right. Hofer, already in the end zone, read the breakdown and curled back to his quarterback where he caught the ball at the three. Hofer dodged one tackler, then darted back to paydirt.

"I just saw Bartlow in trouble there, so I came back to him," Hofer said.

"Their corners tonight were quick, but not as disciplined," he said. "They were biting on first moves. The DB who played on me matched up well, but Bartlow just put the ball in there tight."

Bartlow finished the night 10-of-19 passing for 192 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 42 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.

Hofer's single best night of his career ended with five receptions for 109 yards and two TDs.

"Hofer had a coming-out party tonight," coach Bartlow said. "He made two great adjustments in the air on passes. We needed him to have a big game and he did.

"Our O-line gave Zach (Bartlow) time today - a much better job. Cady's second efforts on runs were outstanding. And defensively, we came to play," he said.

The Cardinal defense limited Elgin to 41 yards of offense in the first half, and 153 yards on the game. W-P's pass defense kenneled the Huskies passing attack to the tune of just two yards all night.

Though W-P played butter-fingers with the ball eight times, each time the pigskin hit the turf a W-P player fell on it before an Elgin Husky.

W-P finished the game with no turnovers, while Elgin coughed up one fumble and one interception to W-P.

W-P ended the game with nine penalties for 102 yards.

W-P has a short week to prepare for its next gridiron clash, playing again Thursday night at 6 p.m. against the JV squad from Wa-Hi's Class 4A foe, Chiawana, in Pasco.
