Recreational boaters can use locks during daylight hours

WALLA WALLA - Recreational boaters will be able to use locks past U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dams on the lower Snake and Columbia rivers almost any time during daylight hours this winter.

Corps officials said the change from scheduled locking times to on-request lockages occurs each summer and winter to accommodate changing volumes of river traffic. The on-request system will continue through May 14, 2011, and will only operate during daylight hours.

Commercial vessels will continue to have precedence over recreational vessels. Recreational vessels may be allowed to lock through with commercial vessels at the discretion of the lock operator.
