Touchet football holds off Ione 48-40

Touchet shuts down the Ione running game in the second half to take the 8-man victory Friday evening.

IONE, Ore. - In Touchet coach Gary Dorman's words, "It was a typical 8-man football game the first half" here Friday night, with the Cardinals holding a 32-28 advantage over the Indians.

The second half was a little different story, as Touchet shut down the Ione rushing game and outscored the hometeam 20-8 to take the 48-40 victory.

"It was a well-played game, both sides were exploiting the other team's weaknesses," Dorman said. "We were able to put points on the board, and so were they. It was up and down the field. It was fun to watch, but it's a lot of gray hairs for a coach."

Jake Hodnefield had a stellar performance at quarterback for the Indians, throwing for 241 yards and five touchdowns, three to Vicente Flores, Dorman said.

"The first half he was right on with his throws," Dorman said of Hodnefield. "He's getting more comfortable at the QB position and with the new offense we put in last year. Things came together for him last night."

Flores missed the first game of the season, but caught six passes for 191 yards and the three TDs in his sophomore opener.

"He's such a competitor," Dorman said of Flores. "He's not willing to back down from anybody. He's a real asset to our team.

"Those two kids (Hodnefield and Flores), as competitive as they are, they complement each other real well. Jake throws it up high and Vicente will make a good catch on it."

Matt Kates opened scoring for Touchet with a 10-yard TD reception from Hodnefield.

Ione answered with a 13-yard scoring reception.

Eric Hines then scampered 60 yards off a Hodnefield throw to score, but was injured on a goal-line tackle on the play.

Ione again answered, but Hodnefield hooked up with Flores for scores of 60 and 18 yards as Touchet went up 28-16.

But the Cardinals' running game, which put up 281 yards in the game, scored twice to take the lead into halftime.

"We made a few adjustments at halftime, and we were able to basically shut them down in the second half," Dorman said. "We just kept plugging along (on offense). We just kept doing what we were doing in the first half."

Ione scored first in the third quarter, but then it was all Touchet as Hodnefield hit Nate O rtiz for a 6-yard score and found Flores on another 18-yarder. Flores secured the victory with a 30-yard fumble recovery returned for the TD with 3 minutes remaining.

"It was a good team win," Dorman said. "We've been preaching ‘team' this year. It was a real team win for us. Everybody pretty much did their job. As coaches, we were pleased with that."

Touchet, now 2-0, travels to Sunnyside Christian for a 7 p.m. game Friday.
