Wenatchee pulls away from Wa-Hi in football matchup

A close first half turns into a 27-7 Big Nine victory for Wenatchee over the Blue Devils Friday.

WENATCHEE - Wenatchee scored 20 unanswered points as the Panthers pulled away from Wa-Hi Friday night for a 27-7 Big Nine victory.

"It's a tough road trip for us," Blue Devils coach Mike Gobel said. "It's four hours away, in a stadium with the crowd right on top of you. We didn't respond the way we're capable of responding."

Wa-Hi trailed 10-7 at halftime, after the teams traded first-quarter touchdowns.

The Panthers scored first, with quarterback Nolan Johnnston finding Keaton Smith on a 25-yard strike with 4:42 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Blue Devils answered four minutes later, with Moe Handcox receiving Matt Watson's 23-yard touchdown pass.

Wenatchee's Angel Guerra kicked a 25-yard field goal with four minutes left in the second quarter to put the Panthers up 10-7.

Wa-Hi put together a drive that appeared to wind up in the end zone near the end of the half, but the score was called back by penalty.

"That was the momentum shifter," Gobel said of the missed opportunity. "We started playing on our heels. We're a young, green team and we over-reacted a bit to that momentum change."

Wenatchee took advantage of the shift, with Cooper Helm punching it in from the with 7:48 remaining in the third quarter, Guerra tacking on a 21-yard field goal five minutes later, and Helm throwing to Rawley Holmberg for a 9-yard score with nine minutes left in the game to round out the scoring.

"They pulled away in the second half," Gobel said.

"In general, we had guys in the right places and we just didnt make plays once we were there," he said. "That's what this game of football is all about, being in the right spot and making plays when you get there."

Wa-Hi next hosts Chiawana at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Borleske Stadium.

"We're going to continue to work hard," Gobel said. "We're not where we want to be yet, but we'll continue to strive for that goal."
