BANKS, Ore. - Led by Katie Zacijek and Elaine Whaley, Whitman College posted Sunday's second-best team score and finished third overall as the two-day Pacific Fall Golf Invitational came to a close at the Quail Valley Golf Course near Banks, Ore.
With Zajicek and Whaley, two first-year players, both shooting 81, Whitman posted a Sunday team score of 341, finishing just four shots off the second-round pace set by Whitworth.
Whitman, in fourth place after Saturday's opening round, finished with a 36-hole score of 698. Whitworth was first at 676 and Linfield second at 681.
Whitman lost 15 strokes on its Saturday team score when one of its players miscounted her scorecard and was disqualified. Take away that mistake and the Missionaries would have finished just two strokes out of second place in the final totals.
Pacific and Willamette finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the team scoring at 720 and 807. Corban University, after carding a 411 on Saturday, did not compete on Sunday.
Catelyn Webber, another of Whitman's first-year players, shot 89 and sophomore Tate Head added a 90 to complete Whitman's Sunday team score.
Also playing Sunday for Whitman were sophomore Caitlin Holland and first-year teammate Erica Zinser, who both shot 91.
Whitworth's Emily Guthrie took medalist honors with a 159 total for her two rounds. Linfield's Brynn Hurdus was two strokes back in second.
For the tournament, Zajicek tied for fourth place with a 36-hole score of 167. Whaley was seventh with a 169 and Webber 10th at 178.
Holland finished at 185, one stroke in front of Zinser.
