Alfred Earl (Al) Poole, 80 passed from this world Sept. 11, 2010, at home in Tahuya, Wash. He was born Aug. 24, 1930, in Collinsville, Miss. and moved with his family to Washington, D.C. when he was 11 years old. Al drove to Walla Walla with a family friend, Bill Roach, where he stayed and boxed his junior year of high school. Al received a boxing scholarship to attend Gonzaga University (1949-1951) and enjoyed success in the ring, fighting in the NCAA National Tournament. He also enjoyed coaching young men, refereeing and judging fights into the 1970s.
Al was a people person who worked many years in the sales of equipment, automotive and truck parts in Spokane, Yakima and Seattle; earning accolades and commendations from many of the people he encountered along his journey.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Elwyn Poole and Ethel Alline (Bounds)Poole; his son Ricky; brother Edward; and sister Merle Blanc. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Pat (Beechinor); daughter Alline (Alli) Poole; son Dennis Poole; grandchildren Jesse Poole and Kristin Clough; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Al fought in the ring, in business and in life. He won often and honestly; he lost with class and dignity. Al lived and died with a friendly, giving attitude and a persistent sense of humor that was an uplifting joy to all who were fortunate to spend time with him, including his final caregivers.
Mass will be held at noon Oct. 2, 2010 at St .Patrick's Catholic Church in Walla Walla with private burial to follow.
