WALLA WALLA - Playing on their home court, senior Elise Otto and sophomore Alyssa Roberg won their first two matches in singles on Saturday to advance to the Sunday quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Pacific Northwest Tennis Championships, which continue through Monday on the Whitman College campus.
Otto and Roberg, the No. 1 seeds in the doubles bracket, also won their first match in doubles late Saturday afternoon.
Roberg, the No. 4 seed in the singles bracket, opened with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Puget Sound's Ada Uy and then dispatched Pacific's Stephanie Villegas 6-0, 6-1.
Roberg faces Puget Sound's Jenna Gerdsen at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the quarterfinals.
Otto, the No. 5 seed in singles, started on Saturday with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Linfield's Gillian Heilbrunn and followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Pacific's Rachel Mizuno.
Otto's quarterfinal match against Willamette's Fabi Dieguez starts at 10 a.m. Sunday.In Saturday's first round of doubles, Otto and Roberg rolled to an 8-3 victory over Pacific's Villegas and Mizuno.
Four Whitman players won their opening matches in singles on Saturday but then lost in the second round.
