Martin Mattice

Martin Arthur Mattice was born on Oct. 17, 1931, in Weston to Archie E. and Bertha F. Shumard-Mattice. In 1934 his family moved to Wallula, where he attended grade school and later graduated from Two Rivers High School at Casey in 1949. Mart began working for Union Pacific Railroad in 1950. In 1951 he joined the U.S. Air Force as a radioman and served during the Korean War; he was honorably discharged in 1955. Martin resumed work for the U.P. Railroad in 1955 and retired in 1991.

Martin and Wanda Huwe were married on Oct. 10, 1971, in Reno, Nev.,the first of many trips to the state. He and Wanda made frequent trips to Spokane and Post Falls, Idaho, to visit family and the Greyhound Park. In addition to being an avid gambler and reader, Mart enjoyed many other activities such as fishing, bowling, golf, volleyball and playing cards. He was a Little League coach and life member of the Elks Lodge #287 and U.P. Employees Club #24. Shortly after retirement, Mart fulfilled a lifelong desire to tour the United States (a total of 10,015 miles) with his wife Wanda, and visited various battlefields and other famous places.

Sharing stories with family and friends was among his favorite pastimes.

Martin was proceeded in death by his parents; brother, Harvey; sister, Lois Mattice-Henderson; brother-in-law, Byron Henderson; and sister-in-law, Sophie Mattice.

He is survived by the love of his life, Wanda; children, Janis Manson, Mike Huwe, Joan Cunnington; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his caregiver, Barbara Stiller.

No services will be held. Donations in memory of Martin may be given to Walla Walla Community Hospice or any other charity of choice through Herring Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla.
