PASCO - Wa-Hi's cross country team stepped up despite unseasonable heat at a Big Nine Invite at the Big Cross Course Tuesday.
The boys defeated Moses Lake, Chiawana, Kamiakin, Eastmont, Southridge and Wenatchee to go undefeated and continue their undefeated season, and the girls defeated Chiawana and Moses Lake in 4A competition, before falling to the 3A schools.
"Today was pretty brutal as far as weather and the course we ran," said Wa-Hi coach Michael Locati. "The Pasco course is very slow and unforgiving in many ways and the heat really played a factor in performances also. Despite the conditions, we competed very well. The team continues to step up when needed."
Wa-Hi's boys defeated Moses Lake, 16-47, and Chiawana was incomplete. In 3A scores, Wa-Hi defeated Kamiakin, 26-29; Eastmont 18-43, Southridge 20-39, and Wenatchee 25-34.
In boys individual results, Aaron Nelson placed second in 16:49, J.P. Wolpert fourth in 17:15, Austin Morgan ninth in 17:58, Gregg Heller 15th in in 18:07, Sean Hollenbeck 18th in 18:21, Blake Gerling 21st in 18:48 and Zack Lapier 25th in 19:04.
The girls defeated Moses Lake, 21-35, and Chiawana was incomplete. The girls lost in 3A competition to Kamiakin, 36-19; Eastmont, 24-22; Southridge, 24-33; and Wenatchee, 24-31.
In girls individual results, Rachel Nelson placed second in 20:59, Jocelyn Vargas was 17th in 23:38, Hannah Hampson 18th in 23:38, Catherine Feistner 28th in 24:28, McKelle Wilwand 31st in 24:36 and Ashley Taylor finished 37th in 26:08.
Wa-Hi competes at the Sunfair Invite in Yakima this weekend.
