Robert Armfield Harris Sr. passed away peacefully on Friday, March 25, 2011, at the Washington Odd Fellows.
Dad/Grandpa/Great-Grandpa/Great-Great-Grandpa was born on Oct. 1, 1916, in Troy, N.C., to Earnest Bismark Harris and Annie Jane Harris. He enlisted into the Army at age 17. He played baseball and boxed for the Army teams and he was a champion checker player. While in the Army he was a supply sergeant and earned the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged on Aug. 17, 1945, and is a World War II veteran.
He had seven brothers and sisters: Loy, Bismark, Charles, Janie, Rachael, Martha and Thelma.
He met Marie Pauline Parr in Alhambra, Calif., and they later married in Yuma, Ariz., in 1941. Together they raised their three children, Bobby, Sandy and Sue. In 1945 he began work for the Firestone Tire Company in South Gate, Calif. He worked there until
1959, at which time they relocated to Washington state. He worked and retired from several industrial construction jobs. He was a high scaler while working at the John Day, Lower Monumental and Lower
Granite dams. He also helped construct Whitman College Cordiner Hall, Eastgate McDonalds, Walla Walla Community College and Saint Mary's Hospital. He was a member of the Washington Idaho Laborers, Oregon Laborers, Laborers Local 348 and was a lifetime member of the V.F.W.
Bob loved to eat and spend time with his family and he looked forward to having big family dinners together. He loved to share his war stories and the many places he had visited through his years. He
enjoyed telling stories and everyone enjoyed listening to them. He was loved very much and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by one brother, Bismark Harris of North Carolina; daughters, Sandy (Bill) Stewart of Walla Walla, and Sue (Leo) Burris of Walla Walla; daughter-in-law, Betty Harris of Walla Walla; seven
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. Waiting for him at the gates of heaven are both his parents; brothers, Loy and Charles Harris; sisters, Janie Saunders,
Rachael Deaton, Martha Schnoor, Thelma Howell; son, Robert (Bobby) Allen Harris Jr.; and grandson, Ronald Lee Johnston.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 9, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the V.F.W. 113 N. Colville St., Walla Walla. Memorial contributions can be made in honor of Robert Harris to the V.F.W. or a charity of choice.
