Burdette C. Huwe, age 84 years, of Waitsburg, died March 29, 2011, at his home. Friends are welcome to join the family at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall in Waitsburg. Private graveside services will be held at the Waitsburg City Cemetery at a later date. He was born March 4, 1927, in Meadow, S.D. His parents were Robert and Hazel Chapman Huwe. He attended Huntsville and Waitsburg Schools. At the age of 17 he joined the Navy and served on the USS Gulff in the South Pacific. He was assigned to the ship when it was commissioned and was still serving on its deck when it was decommissioned…it was a ship built for war time. After serving he returned to Waitsburg where he married Dallas Hulce in a ceremony held in Lewiston, Idaho. They were later divorced.
He was employed at the Walla Walla County Road Dept. for 30 years. At the time of his retirement in 1984 he was a foreman. Burdette was a 55-year member of the American Legion and served as a Waitsburg Volunteer Fireman for 30 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping and made several trips to Alaska. He also enjoyed watching football and baseball on TV and was known to watch very intently and didn't like to be disturbed. He kept a tidy home and was a good cook.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Karen Huwe; two daughters, Becky Huwe and Patti Hendrickson, all of Waitsburg; four grandchildren, Jami, Jessica, Amy and Connor; five great-
grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Rod Baker of Waitsburg; a brother and five sisters-in-law, Larry and Mae Huwe of Tacoma and Meredith Huwe of Waitsburg, Alice Huwe of College Place, Donna Huwe of Dayton, Wanda Mattice of Walla Walla; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Percy, Bob, Lyle, Pete and Duane (Cork) Huwe; and one sister, Bonnie Nichols.
