Marie Johnson
April 10, 1923 - March 27, 2011

Marie passed away gracefully at her home in Walla Walla, on Sunday, March 27, 2011, at the age of 87. She was born in Detroit, Michigan to Katherine and Thomas Noland. When WWII began she joined the Navy. While stationed in Seattle, she met Wilbert T. Johnson, a submarine sailor. They married 10 days later. After the war they settled in Castro County, Texas and stated a family. In 1954 the family moved to Novato, Calif., where they began a fifty year career as district managers for the San Francisco Chronicle. It was a family business, even the "kids" helped. What a great life she lived!

Marie was a strong woman, always ready to help others. While raising seven children and running the business, she was an avid reader, reading at least a book a week. In her youth she was a champion swimmer. In later years she was able to travel across the United States, parts of Europe, the Middle East, Mexico and Hawaii. She retired to Walla Walla six years. ago.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert "Johnny" Johnson, who died in 1989; and her son Michael. She is survived by daughter, Pamela Bryan and husband, Michael of Walla Walla, daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" and husband, John Hindmarch of Novato, Calif, son, Patrick and wife Maya of Petaluma, Calif., son, Kelly and wife Shelly of Petaluma, Calif., daughter, Jody Johnson of Walla Walla, son, David and wife Brenda of Clearlake, Calif., daughter-in-law, Kathy "Becky" Johnson of Healdsburg, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial service in Walla Walla will be at 636 Catherine Street on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at 2 p.m. Please join us in celebrating mom's life.
