MILTON-FREEWATER - Mac-Hi's boys and Waitsburg-Prescott's girls claimed team titles here Friday afternoon and two local athletes - Waitsburg-Prescott's Ronnie Hulce and Mac-Hi's Emily Childers - shared the honor of top female with 30.5 points apiece during the 75th running of the Carnival of Speed track and field meet at Shockman Field.

Nineteen high schools from Oregon and Washington were represented by 575 athletes during the day-long event.

The Pioneer boys edged Enterprise, 119.5-117, while W-P slipped past Union, 73-69.

Hulce won both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, ran a leg on W-P's winning 400-meter relay team, and placed second in the high jump. Childers claimed the 200 and 400, was a member of Mac-Hi's triumphant 1600-meter relay foursome, and was runner-up in the 100.

Matt Perren of Enterprise took the high jump, and crossed the finish line second in both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles on his way to being the meet's best male.

Mac-Hi boys finishing first individually were Dylon Wagoner (shot put and discus), Tony Ng (110 hurdles), and Pancho Saldana (javelin).

Pioneer males placing second were Alberto Rodriguez (200), Rick Sandoval (400), and Kaleb Taylor (800). Taylor, Sandoval, Saldana, and Rodriguez teamed up to take second in the 1600 relay.

Kathleen Hopkins, Erica Torres and Veronica Garcia joined Childers for the girls 1600 relay.

"Everyone had outstanding performances up and down the line," Mac-Hi coach John Milleson said. "That's a good thing. It was a good, balanced meet. Great competition."

W-P's Kristin Potter won the 100 and 200, and Isabela Benito was second in the 1500. Potter, Krystal Harris and Yesenia Escalante contributed to the 400 relay win.

Seth Deal helped lead the W-P boys to a third-place performance with victories in the 1500 and 3000. Jared Morris, Antonio Tompkins, Justin Armstrong and Billy Brown brought home the 400 relay crown and Eshom Estes was second in the discus.

"Ronnie is where we hoped she would be," W-P coach Jeff Bartlow said. "She's been working hard and it is paying off.

"Kristin's times were solid, competitive," Bartlow said. "She's going to be tough.

"Nathan is about where he was at the end of last season," Bartlow said. "He put himself in a great position for the (home) stretch (of the season)."

W-P's Kayla Huxoll was injured during the proceedings when she was struck by a javelin while warming up in the infield.

"It (the javelin) went through the back of her (right) leg between the Achilles tendon and the bone," Bartlow said. "We're thankful she wasn't hurt worse."

DeSales enjoyed a couple of firsts. Nick Wales won the boys 300 hurdles and Allison Wujek prevailed in the girls high jump.

"We had a lot of PR's," DeSales coach Mike Michels said. "Our throwers had a good day. They all PR'd in at least one or two events.

"Nick had a good day in the hurdles," Michels said. "Allison had a good day in the (100) hurdles and Brigit Lyons had a good day in the 100 hurdles (finishing third and fourth, respectively)."

Weston-McEwen's McKayla Carlin was first in the long jump and triple jump. The TigerScots' Jacob Christopher snatched second in the 3000.

"It was a great meet and a great day for track and field," W-M coach Loran Monaco said. "I'm happy with my kids. We had a lot of PR's. That's pretty exciting from a coach's point of view.

"The small schools did a pretty good job," Monaco said as the competition reached its closing stages. "It (the meet) isn't as big as it's been, but everybody seems to be having fun. It's a well-run meet."

Walla Walla Valley Academy got a boys triple jump win from Brandon Bissell and a pair of seconds from Casey Roosma in the girls 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

"She was a little short of the high-point title (within 2.5 points), but that's a very good accomplishment," WWVA coach Dan Solis said. "I was pleased with her effort.

"We had a lot of PR's," Solis said. "All of the kids had a good meet.

"Coach Milleson runs a well-organized meet," Solis said. "Thanks to John and his staff for organizing a good meet."

Afterward, Milleson thanked the volunteers for their efforts throughout the sun-kissed April day.

"It was run well because of them," Milleson said. "My assistant coach, Stacie Pickler, recruited all the help. It was an easy day for us as coaches. All I had to do was stand there (at the finish line) and count laps."
