Norene Hahn was born on Sept. 19, 1935, the daughter of Leland and Idena (Cox) Ward in Sheldon, Mo. She attended school in Sheldon, Mo., and Cashmere, Wash., graduating from McLoughlin Union High School in Milton-Freewater. She met Raymond Hahn at a Halloween party in October 1956, and they were married April 26, 1957. Norene was a stay-at-home
mom until all of her children were in school. She then went to work at Umapine School as the deputy clerk. In 1980 Norene and Raymond bought the Milton-Freewater Dairy Queen, which she enjoyed managing until they sold it in 1987. Norene later went to work for Blue Mountain Action Council in the Energy Assistant department, where she was soon promoted to energy assistant manager. She continued in this role until she retired. She found this career extremely rewarding.
In Norene's retirement years she was an active member and volunteer at the Milton-Freewater Senior Center, where she served as the treasurer and wrote the monthly newsletter. She was very successful in grant writing for the center - one accomplishment was receiving a grant for new flooring. Norene and Raymond enjoyed taking vacations in their motorhome traveling across the United States including trips across the Northern U.S., Southern U.S. and Alaska. Most recently, they enjoyed a cruise to Alaska to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Her pride and joy were her children, and especially her
10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Until her recent illness, they attended each grandchild's high school and college graduation, traveling as far as Missouri, Utah, Oregon and Washington.
Norene is survived by her husband of 54 years, Raymond Hahn; mother, Idena Ward of Milton-Freewater; son, Casey Hahn (Loretta Higgins) of Forest Grove, Ore,; daughters, Detricia Hahn (Dave Anderson) of Homer, Alaska, Jolene Riggs (Wayne) of Walla Walla, and Cynthia Wagner (Kyle) of Morgan, Utah; and 10n grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
