PENDLETON - Wa-Hi hit three solo homers but it wasn't enough in a 6-3 loss to Pendleton in nonleague baseball action Tuesday.
The Blue Devils couldn't put together hits for a rally on the day but played solid ball besides, said Wa-Hi coach Keith Gradwohl.
"We're playing some quality teams," Gradwohl said.
Pendleton is 11-0 in Oregon 5A baseball and is ranked third in the state, he said
"They were pretty tough," he said.
The Buckaroos opened with two in the first inning, but Kevin Toon's solo homer in the third closed the Blue Devils within one.
Michael Pontarolo hit the second Wa-Hi homer of the day in the top of the fourth for a 2-all tied, but Pendleton answered in the bottom of the inning.
Pendleton's Shawn Lane was on third when Lane Richards hit a Baltimore chop to score him and advance to first. Reese Merriman then hit a two-run homer for a 5-2 lead.
Although Taylor Lemke hit the Blue Devil's third solo homer in the fifth, it wasn't enough in the loss.
"We didn't play badly," said Gradwohl. "But we were lacking some clutch hitting. Playing like that against a quality team is OK."
The loss wraps up the Blue Devil's nonleague action with a 4-4 mark overall. They open Big Nine league play hosting Eisenhower at 2 p.m. Friday.
"The road to districts starts Friday," he said. "We've got the nonleague out of the way, we did OK and now we're ready to start league play."
