Mac-Hi bounces back from baseball sweep

The Pioneers are swept by Baker Friday but pick up a nonleague win on Saturday.

MILTON-FREEWATER - Mac-Hi bounced back from being overpowered by Baker in Friday's Greater Oregon League openers to pull out an 11-10 non-league win over Elgin here Saturday.

Baker slugged nine home runs in downing the Pioneers 23-6 and 21-0 in Friday's GOL play.

The Pioneers bounced back but saw Elgin jump to a 3-0 lead in Saturday play and extend the lead to 7-3.

Mac-Hi fought back to grab a 9-7 lead after four only to see Elgin post a three spot in the top of the sixth and take a 10-9 lead to the home sixth.

"After getting throttled yesterday (Friday), I was happy to see us battle back twice today," Mac-Hi coach Mike Garcia said. "It would've been easy for us to just fold, but we didn't."

Down 10-9, Willie McCoy was hit by a pitch to lead off the Pioneer sixth. Jake Morris, who had three hits on the day, reached on an infield single. Taylor Hodgen followed with a sacrifice bunt and the Pioneers had the go-ahead run at second with one out.

Following a walk to load the bases, Pat Sheets delivered a clutch two-run single to score Morris with what stood up as the game winner.

"I told our guys to make them pitch," Garcia said of the sixth inning rally. "We wanted them to look for a pitch in their zone. Taylor (Hodgen) who saved some runs early with a catch in left, put down a bunt that couldn't have been any better."

On Friday in Baker, the Bulldogs took advantage of a favorable wind and exploded for big innings in both games.

Baker used a 12-run fourth and a 19-hit attack to put game one away despite Pioneer home runs from Kevin Cuellar and Dylan Garcia.

The Bulldogs lit up the second inning with 12 runs in the second game. Alex Ortiz collected the only Pioneer hit in the 21-0 second game loss.

"Our defense was good (three errors on the day)," Garcia said. "We knew they (Baker) were a very good hitting club and we left a few (pitches) belt high. We kept battling even though we were getting pummeled."

Mac-Hi drops to 0-2 in the GOL and will host Umatilla Tuesday in a non-league game before traveling to Ontario Saturday for a GOL double dip.
