Blue Devils down Riverhawks, 29-3, in baseball sweep

Wa-Hi has 24 hits in the Friday sweep, while Chiawna manages just six.

PASCO - Wa-Hi pounded out 24 hits, scored 29 runs, and limited Chiawana to three runs and six hits in sweeping a Columbia Basin Big Nine 4A baseball doubleheader here Friday.

An eight-run third-inning uprising in the opener propelled the Blue Devils to a 17-3 win. Matt Watson tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout as Wa-Hi blanked the Riverhawks 12-0 in the nightcap.

Wa-Hi improves to 4-0 in the CBBN 4A standings.

"We're really happy with where we're at," Wa-Hi coach Keith Gradwohl said. "We're looking forward to continuing (to play like we've been) and get to the district playoffs."

A Will Parnicky two-run double in the second inning started the Blue Devil scoring barrage in the opener. Wa-Hi then put it away with an eight spot in the third as the Blue Devils invoked the 10-run rule after six.

The Blue Devils pounded out 10 hits from 10 different hitters, and Drew Christina and Jake Campeau combined to limit the Riverhawks to only four hits.

"Pitching was pretty solid," Gradwohl said. "Drew moves his record to 6-0. He had 10 strikeouts, but his pitch count got up as he had to deal with bad weather. It rained through the first game. Jake (Campeau) closed it out and struck out three, giving us 13 strikeouts in the 10-run game (six innings)."

Watson helped himself to all the runs he would need with a two-run double in the first inning of game two.

Watson led the offense with three hits. Kevin Toon and Taylor Lemke collected two hits each as Wa-Hi pounded out 14 hits in gaining the 12-0 win.

Watson, on the mound for the Blue Devils, gave up two hits while striking out 14 as Wa-Hi coasted to the win.

"It's the second consecutive shut out for Matt," Gradwohl said. "He (Watson) comes off a shutout of Ike last week, and Chiawana this week. He's been solid."

Wa-Hi improves to 8-4 overall and hosts Moses Lake for a league doubleheader at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
