KENNEWICK - Wa-Hi's mixed doubles tennis team of Drew Swenson and Rachel Schueller finished a team-high second at a windy Tri-Cities Invite here Friday and Saturday.

Boys singles player Ruben Kuznetsov finished third, Parker Postlewait was fifth, the boys doubles team of Nam Delespierre and Brandan McKinney were sixth, and boys singles player Kevin Leier was eighth.

On the girls side, the Blue Devil doubles team Allison Mehn and Rosa Tobin finished second, and the team of Tianna Cummings and Claire Konen placed fifth.

Wa-Hi's mixed doubles team of Jack Crouter and Chantel Desjarlais were fourth.

As a team, the Blue Devils finished tied for seventh at the 15-team invite.

"Let's just say the wind conditions at Saturday's Tri Cities Invite were not ideal, but our kids came to play," Wa-Hi boys coach Ted Cummings said. "All 15 teams had to deal with the rain on Friday and the chilly breeze on Saturday, so the playing field was level.

"While the athletes played at seven different sites, our viewing (Cummings and Wa-Hi girls coach Keven Peck) was limited, but in the matches I was able to witness, the No. 2 mixed team of Schueller-Swenson came the nearest to a perfect tournament," he said. "After winning three rounds in decisive fashion, in the final Rachel and Drew battled from a first-set deficit to win 7-5 over a veteran Richland duo. Rachel took a deflected ball to the eye late in the second set and narrowly lost 5-7 before the match was determined by a third-set match tiebreak to 10 points (10-6)."

"The Tri City Invite is always a great opportunity to see different competition and play a lot of matches in a short time," Peck said. "This year's invite was shortened to one day due to rain. It was a long and exhausting day, but it is was worth every minute for the mental and physical experience we gained. The weather was not very cooperative with rain on Friday and high winds all day Saturday. Regardless, the girls all took the conditions in stride and played through it.

"Our No. 2 doubles team of Allison Mehn and Rosa Tobin had the best run of the day," he said. "They played some great tennis defeating Ferris 8-2, Southridge 6-3, 6-4 and CV 6-3, 6-3 before dropping the final to University 1-6, 2-6. Allison and Rosa have come a long way in their doubles tennis and they showed that in the invite. A second place finish is a great result for them and our team."

The Blue Devils continue Columbia Basin League play with a 4-0 record at undefeated Richland 3 p.m. Tuesday.
