WALLA WALLA - Three prison inmates are facing felony charges for crimes they allegedly committing during a riot at the Washington State Penitentiary more than two years ago.
The charges against Lamark A. Walker, Daniel F. Salas and Mark J. Viena were filed Wednesday in Walla Walla County Superior Court.
Officials said a fight between two inmates broke out about 1 p.m. Feb. 7, 2009. It then escalated into a melee involving at least 24 prisoners in the day room of Unit 6 in the prison's main institution, according to authorities.
Walker, 43, is accused of second-degree assault and prison riot for allegedly throwing a wooden storage box at a fellow inmate.
Salas and Viena, both 33, are charged with custodial assault and prison riot. Each is suspected of assaulting a correctional officer during the massive fight.
Walker, Salas and Viena will be taken to court for their first appearances on May 9.
