TOUCHET - Garfield-Palouse and Touchet split a Southeast 1B baseball twin bill here Saturday.
The Indians picked up the 15-1, five-inning opening win, but lost to the Vikings, 16-12, in the nightcap.
Nate Ortiz pitched the complete-game opener for the Indians, striking out five and giving up two walks and two hits. The only run the Vikings scored came in the first inning.
"He did a pretty good job," said Touchet coach Wayne Dickey.
Eric Hines opened scoring for the Indians in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer, then four more runs were scored for a quick 6-1 lead.
"It was a nice way to start the game," Dickey said.
Game two was a different story. The Vikings came alive for the win, knocking out six hits.
"Between the three pitchers (Tyler Dodd, Octavio Preciado and Jose Martinez) we gave up four base-on-balls, and just about every one of them ended up scoring," Dickey said. "That didn't help us."
The Indians came back to score two in the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs, but the Vikings ended the threat.
"We couldn't quite get it done," Dickey said. "The kids came back and battled to go seven innings."
The split moves the Indians to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in league. They play a nonleague game at Dayton at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
