LA GRANDE - Mac-Hi failed to get the clutch hit in Greater Oregon League softball action in a 3-2 loss to La Grande in the first game of a doubleheader here Saturday.
The Pioneers figured it out for game two as Mac-Hi pounded out 22 hits and defeated the Tigers 13-5.
"In the first game, we had two runners thrown out at the plate and made some base running errors," Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian said. "We couldn't string our hits together. We strung them together in the second game."
Cheyenne Kessler collected two hits, including a home run, to lead the Pioneers first-game attack that came up short.
The Pioneers saw La Grande jump to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap. Mac-Hi battled back with a four-run third to tie the game at 5-5.
"We tied it in the third," Christian said. "We kept battling and produced some runs."
Kessler and Megan Reed each collected four hits and each hit a home run to lead the Pioneer 22-hit attack. Kalyn Odman also chipped in four hits.
In the circle, Shawney Garcia came on in relief and worked four scoreless innings to nail down the win.
"Shawney did an awesome job," Christian said. "She kept them off balance."
The Pioneers see their GOL road trip end with a 2-4 league mark and return home to host league-leader Baker Saturday at 1 p.m.
