Atkinson golfs to third for Wa-Hi in Richland

RICHLAND - Dean Atkinson's 80 was good for third place and led Wa-Hi's boys at a Big Nine pod match at Meadow Springs Country Club here Monday.

Richland's Matt Rezendes and Cole Lorenzo tied for medalist honors with 2-over-par 74s.

"Dean had a really good day," Wa-Hi coach Jim Smith said. "There were only two in the 70s, so for him to be at 80 was a really round."

Smith said the weather made the round challenging.

"It was typical spring weather," he said. "It was raining like crazy when we teed off. Halfway through the rain quit and the wind came up. It's a tough course anyway, and the scores indicate how tough the conditions were and the course was. Two scores in the 70s isn't too many."

Wa-Hi's Houston Rice finished 22nd with a 94, Jeremiah Mason tied for 23rd with a 95, Nick Atwood tied for 26th at 97, Cameron Mountain was 31st at 100, and Gunnar Leighty was 32nd at 102.

Richland won the team score at 312, followed by Moses Lake at 339, Wenatchee 352, Wa-Hi 366, Chiawana 372, Eisenhower 402 and Davis was incomplete.

Wa-Hi should be in third in the season standings, Smith said, as the Blue Devils head to Moses Lake for a pod match Monday. The district tournament is at the same course two weeks from now.
