WESTON -- A Milton-Freewater man was accidentally shot in the back of the head and shoulders Tuesday night during a turkey hunting excursion in the Oregon mountains, officials said.

Justin Warne, 41, was transported to Providence St. Mary Medical Center Tuesday night. Details on his condition were unavailable this morning.

The Umatilla County Sheriff's Office reported receiving a call at 7:56 p.m. Wednesday from Warne's hunting partner, Jasper Winn of Milton-Freewater. Winn told officials he had accidentally shot his friend with a shotgun and was in the process of transporting him to the hospital. Warne was alert, conscious and ambulatory at the time, officials said.

A deputy arranged for an ambulance to meet Winn at the bottom of the hill at Highway 11 on the edge of the city limits, said Lt. Glen Diehl this morning. The ambulance took Warne the rest of the way.

Diehl said there is no suspicion of foul play. No further details were available this morning.
