DAYTON - Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes - Dayton made them here Tuesday in a 7-6 non-league prep baseball loss to Touchet.
"Three of our errors, two walks and a hit batsman accounted for six of their runs," Bulldogs coach Sal Benavides said. "It seems like we take one step forward and two back. Our mistakes - errors and walks - are killing us."
"It was a real close ballgame," said Touchet coach Wayne Dickey. "It was a good game. Both teams played well and we were able to score three runs in the sixth to win it."
Cori Ochoa and Eddy Contreras opened the sixth with singles, then Colton Goble walked and Octavio Preciado scored Ochoa on a sacrifice.
Eric Hines singled to score the next two. Nate Ortiz also scored Elias Martinez with a right-field triple in the fifth for an important Touchet RBI, Dickey said.
Dayton was guilty of six errors in the game and Bulldogs pitchers Colton Bickelhaupt and Lowden Smith combined to issue five walks plus one hit batsman, which enabled Touchet to overcome a 3-0 deficit after one inning of play, a 5-2 deficit after three frames and a 6-4 Bulldogs lead going into the sixth.
Dayton outhit Touchet 6-4, with Garrett Turner leading the way with a single, two doubles and a triple. His triple in the first inning knocked in a pair of Dayton runs.
"Garrett tried to keep us in it," Benavides said.
Ochoa had two of the Indians' four hits, including a single to lead off a three-run, game-winning rally in the sixth inning. Ochoa scored on a passed ball.
"We had more passed balls than I can count," Benavides said.
Dayton managed just one run out of a bases-loaded situation in the fifth inning. And Turner's double to lead off the seventh put the tying run in scoring position, but Nate Ortiz, the Indians' fourth pitcher of the day, struck out the next three Bulldogs to end the game.
The victory improved Touchet's record to 3-8 overall. The Indians take a 1-2 Southeast 1B District home doubleheader against Pomeroy on Tuesday.
Dayton is now 4-8 overall and 2-4 in Southeast 2B District play. The Bulldogs entertain Waitsburg-Prescott Saturday in an 11 a.m. league twin bill.
Touchet improves to 4-7 in nonleague play and is 1-2 in league with the win. Touchet travels to St. John-Endicott Saturday and wraps its league schedule with Pomeroy Tuesday.
