SPOKANE - Walla Walla Community College swept through Spokane in an NWAACC baseball doubleheader Wednesday.
The Warriors topped the Bigfoot, 6-1 and 7-5.
"We approached the two games like this was the start of the playoffs," said WWCC coach Dave Meliah. "I was real pleased with our mentality and effort."
The Warriors improve to 12-6 in NWAACC East Region play with the wins. They're 22-10 overall and in fourth place in the East Region, three NWAACC games behind leader Yakima Valley.
Tyler Roberts pitched the complete first game for the Warriors, striking out five and giving up no walks. He's 4-1 on the season.
"Tyler was outstanding," Meliah said. "It was probably our best pitching performance of the season so far."
The Warriors opened the first game with single runs in the second and third innings, and broke it open in the top of the sixth, when they scored four runs with two outs and no runners on base.
Kasey Knigge, Justin Windsor and Alex Bonczyk singled, Brandon Renteria doubled to bring all three home, then Matt Garza singled and a throwing error brought Renteria home.
"Brandon had a huge hit for us," Melaiah said of Renteria's three-RBI double. "It gave us some breathing room."
The Warriors opened game two with four runs in the top of the first, including a three-RBI home run by Kyle Sani and an RBI single by Chance Kopacz, but Spokane answered with four of its own, with help from some Warrior errors.
WWCC bounced back for two in the second with a Kopacz two-RBI double and another in the third - and the Bigfoot couldn't answer until a single run in the bottom of the seventh.
"We played a pretty clean game defensively and pitching-wise after the first inning," Meliah said the 7-5 win.
The Warriors host Columbia Basin for a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader. The Hawks stand in second place at 14-4 in East Region play and ended a 15-game Yakima winning streak Wednesday in Pasco.
