Wa-Hi girls edged by Eisenhower tennis

WALLA WALLA - Wa-Hi's girls tennis team lost a close match to visiting Eisenhower here Thursday.

The Blue Devils fell, 4-3, with Ike players taking three of four singles matches.

"As they always do, they battled hard and never gave up," said Wa-Hi coach Keven Peck. "Ike just had too much strength in the singles for us to deal with."

Wa-Hi's Claire Konen picked up the only singles victory of the day with a two-set win over Ali Sellstead.

In doubles action, Kristine Leier-Chantel Dejarlais and Jaime Quaresma-Mari Arceo led Wa-Hi to a 3-1 record.

It was Quaresma and Arceo's first varsity win.

"It was great to see them get that first win," Peck said. "It will boost their confidence and ultimately that will help us as a team."

No. 1 singles player Tianna Cummings lost in three sets to Ike's Claire Bohosky.

"She played her heart out and has some great experience to take into the remainder of the season," Peck said.

And the loss was a good experience for the rest of the team, Peck said.

"The girls walked off the courts with positive attitudes despite the loss," he said. "That is one of the great things about these girls - they do not dwell on the past. They will once again use the experience to better themselves as players and apply that knowledge to their next opponent."

Wa-Hi's girls hosts Eastmont at noon Saturday at the Wa-Hi tennis courts.
