MILTON-FREEWATER - Mac-Hi gave first-place and undefeated Baker all and more than it could handle in Greater Oregon League softball action here Saturday.
The Pioneers handed the Bulldogs their first league loss as Kaitlin Erm tossed a six-hit complete game and the Pioneers defeated the Bulldogs 9-1, and in the process handed D.J. McCauley her first loss from inside the circle.
Mac-Hi took a 4-1 lead to the top of the fifth in the second game. Baker responded with five runs, and though the Pioneers had some chances, the Bulldogs came away with a 6-4 win to earn a split.
"We had a chance to win two," Pioneers coach Nicole Christian said. "It was frustrating to have the lead going to the fifth of the second game, then have opportunities. We left six runners on base, including the tying runs in the seventh."
Megan Reed's two-run double keyed a three-run first for the Pioneers in the opener as Mac-Hi jumped to a 3-0 lead.
Alyssa Harrington doubled home two as the Pioneers iced the first game with a four-run sixth. Erm did the rest from inside the circle, as the Bulldogs only managed MacKenzie Shrack's sixth-inning solo homer.
Harrington, Reed, Belen Betancourt, and Karli Cortez each had two hits to pace the Pioneers' 12-hit attack.
Cortez, Kariss Carrillo, and Cheyenne Kessler collected two hits each, but the Pioneers couldn't overcome the five spot the Bulldogs put up in the fifth in the 6-4 second-game loss.
Mac-Hi improves to 3-5 in the GOL.
The Pioneers play Wa-Hi at WWCC at 7 p.m. Tuesday before returning to GOL play to host Ontario at 1 p.m. Saturday.
