Missionaries fall to Pirates in penultimate doubleheader

Whitman drops to Whitworth, 10-2 and 14-1. The teams end their season today.

WALLA WALLA - Visiting Whitworth broke open a close first game with a four-run seventh inning and rode that momentum to a doubleheader sweep of Whitman College Saturday afternoon at Borleske Stadium.

Whitworth finished off a 10-2 victory in the opener and banged out 19 hits in rolling to a 14-1 triumph in the nightcap.

The Pirates improved to 13-10 in the Northwest Conference and 20-19 overall.

A young Whitman team dropped to 3-20 in the NWC and 4-30 on the season.

The two teams finish their three-game weekend series, and their seasons, with a single game at noon today at Borleske.

Whitman had a chance to take the lead in game one when Eric Korsmo walked and Aaron Cohen singled to open the Missionary second inning.

But the Pirate infield turned its second double play in as many innings to squelch the Whitman threat.

Whitworth took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Landon Scott launched his sixth home run of the season to left field.

Whitman nearly pulled even in the bottom of the inning. Korsmo drew a two-out, four-pitch walk, stole second and was rounding third for home when Whitworth centerfielder Kevin Valerio made a nice running catch of Cohen's sinking liner.

After tacking on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 3-0 lead, the Pirates pulled away with four runs in the seventh. Michael Takemura and Gerhard Muelheims led off with triples, and Valerio and Jarrell followed with run-scoring hits.

In the bottom of the seventh, Cohen led off with a walk and freshman Casey Minnick singled. But the Missionaries hit into their third double play of the game to end the inning.

Whitworth pitcher Liam O'Brien scattered two hits and three walks before leaving the hill with one out in the bottom of the eighth.

Senior Jay Richards and Cam Young greeted reliever Kittrick Kane with back-to-back singles, but a ground-out kept the Missionaries scoreless.

Whitman pushed across its two runs in the bottom of the ninth. After Cohen drilled his second home run of the season to left field, Minnick singled and scored when Kyle Buckham tripled to right field.

Justin Weeks started on the mound for Whitman and kept his side in the game through six innings. He left with one out in the seventh.

Cohen and Minnick had two hits apiece for Whitman. Nick Ashley, Scott and Takemura paced the Pirates with three hits each while Muelheims added two more.

In game two, both teams tallied a run in their first at-bats.

Muelheims walked to start the nightcap, moved around to third base on two balk calls, and then raced home when Scott walked and drew a throw in stealing second base.

Freshman Jimmy Madden countered for Whitman in the bottom of the first, lining a single to right that scooted past the fielder for a two-base error. A shallow fly to center and ground ball to third nearly left Madden stranded at third base, but Korsmo came through with a two-out, run-scoring single through the six hole.

Whitman was poised to take the lead when Cohen followed Korsmo's single with a double off the scoreboard in left, but a fly ball to center ended the threat.

Whitworth bunched four hits, two of the infield variety, into three runs in the top of the second.

The Pirates then scored in each of the next four innings to break the game open. Nick Ashley belted a sole homer in the third and JR Jarrell clubbed a grand slam in the fifth.

Valerio finished game two with four hits while Scott and Jarrell added three apiece.

Four Whitworth pitchers combined to limit Whitman to six hits - one each for six different players.

Eric Anderson started and got the pitching victory for the Pirates. He gave way to his bullpen with one out in the sixth, his side already ahead 14-1.
