HEPPNER - Weston-McEwen and Heppner split a Special District 6 baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The TigerScots won the opener, 13-4, but dropped the second, 13-3, to the No. 7-ranked Mustangs. Weston-McEwen is No. 5, and the teams are tied for second in league play.
"I was very pleased with the boys," said W-M coach T.J. Haguewood. "They came ready to play. They've got prom today and their minds were scattered, but they battled away and got the first win on the opponent's field."
Dallas Reich pitched the complete first game, giving up four runs on eight hits, while hitting a home run in the effort.
"He wasn't on his game completely but he battled through it," Haguewood said.
Drew Greenwalt also homered in the win.
But the TigerScots couldn't hold on for the sweep, as Heppner came back to 10-run them in five innings in the nightcap.
The TigerScots opened the first with two runs, but let the Mustangs back in.
"We had some calls go against us and then we gave up a couple of runs," Haguewood said. "We struggled a little pitching, had trouble throwing strikes and gave up too many free bases. It's pretty hard to win that way, but we're happy getting a split on the road against a good, quality team."
The TigerScots, 7-2 in league and 10-6 overall, play Umatilla Tuesday in a nonleague matchup.
