WALLA WALLA -- A weekend robbery didn't go as smooth as silk for two suspects.

According to Officer Tim Bennett, Walla Walla police spokesman, the crime unfolded when a man entered Taboo Lingerie, 513 N. Wilbur Ave., shortly before 5:43 p.m. Saturday and displayed a handgun.

But according to probable cause statements presented in Walla Walla County Superior Court today, two women in the store were able to sneak out as the robbery was in progress. They got in their vehicle and called 911, then drove to a parking lot across the street and provided descriptions of the suspect, which way he went and the type of car he was seen getting into.

Officers quickly found a car matching the description of the suspect vehicle and stopped it on North Division Street south of Isaacs Avenue. Two men in the vehicle, Fredrick J. Mitzel, 28, and Antonio Birrueta, 26, both of 442 S.W. Eighth St., College Place, were arrested.

After obtaining a search warrant, Bennett said police recovered an undisclosed amount of cash and a potpourri believed taken in the robbery, as well as a BB pistol. Detectives also found clothing believed worn by one of the suspects during the robbery.

Birrueta was booked into Walla Walla County Jail for investigation of first-degree robbery, second-degree assault and third-degree theft. Mitzel was also being held for investigation of complicity to first-degree robbery. Both had first appearances today before Walla Walla County Court Judge Donald W. Schacht, who set bail at $50,000 for each suspect.
