LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - Port needs change of direction

Our support for Barlow Corkrum comes after careful consideration of the many issues facing the Port of Walla Walla.

The mandate to the Port commissioners is to improve economic opportunities for the benefit of everyone in Walla Walla County. While some of their efforts should be applauded, such as RailEx and the efforts to save the VA Medical Center, we have serious questions regarding their continuing policy of buying vast amounts of industrial properties, farm land and water rights that should remain in the private sector.

The Port should not be in competition with local, tax-paying property owners and private business. It is clear to us the time has come for a change in leadership and direction for the Port of Walla Walla.

As a fifth-generation Walla Walla native, Barlow's family has worked the soil of this county for over 150 years. He knows the importance of hard work, honesty and fair play. We know Barlow honors our long-held Walla Walla County community values.

We fully support Barlow for Port commissioner because he shares our concerns and has both the integrity and determination to get the Port back on track.
