Walter L. "Windy" Williams of Milton-Freewater passed away Aug. 10, 2011, at the age of 79 years. Services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the Milton-Freewater Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions in memory of Walter Williams to the Meadowood Springs Speech Camp or a charity of choice in care of the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.
Walter Lewis Williams was born May 4, 1932, the son of Willie Author and Virgie (Stone) Williams in Finley, Okla. He was the fifth of 11 children and at the age of 12 the family moved to Las Cruces, N.M. At 16 he worked with some of his family on a dairy. Then at 19 he went to work at White Sands Proving Gounds until he joined the Air Force in 1952. Walter served overseas in France, and in 1956 he was honorably discharged at New York. Returning to family who had moved to Prineville, Ore., Walter met Darlene McCallister and they were married Aug. 23, 1957. They started their life together in Weston, and later moved to Milton-Freewater and the surrounding area. Walter felled timber for 38 years, retiring in 1994. He enjoyed family gatherings, fishing, hunting and especially with his hounds. He was a charter member of the BPOE Elks Lodge 2146 and a member of the Eastern Oregon Hound Club.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene of Milton-Freewater; children and spouses, David A. Williams and Deanna Baker of Milton-Freewater, Walter "Wes" and Wanda Williams of Walla Walla, and Marlene G. and Mel Williams Goodrich of Lewiston; six grandchildren and spouses, Mike Williams and Desiree, Wayne Williams, Matt Williams and Lindsay, Melissa Williams Harrison and Jason, Nicole Goodrich Cady and John and Jessica Goodrich; four great-grandchildren, Connor Piper, Austyn and Logan Cady and Huck Harrison; two brothers; and four sisters; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. His parents and four sisters all preceded him in death.
